Well, Cyber Crime involves criminal offenses that can be done through the Internet or other various forms of computer technology. Cyber Crime includes actions such as  hacking, online scams and fraud, identity theft, attacks on computer systems and illegal or prohibited online content. In the end, Cyber Crime can be extremely devastating for victims for numerous reasons, even financially.

In this powerful digital age that we live in, our data and personal info can be easily retrieved if we are not careful. Social media can be one way where ones can become a victim of some sort of Cyber Crime. How exactly then can we protect ourselves from Cyber Crime? Here are a few basic ways:

  • Always keep your MAC or Windows computers up to date
  • Make sure your computer is NOT releasing all your privacy info
  • With any account you may have, make sure to choose strong passwords
  • Firewalls are important for your network, so make sure that it is always active
  • Anti-Virus Software w/Phishing protection is a MUST to help against this
  • Protect your personal information. Store passwords in a safe place
  • If the offer looks to good be true, it probably is…Stay AWAY from it

Identity Theft – Don’t Be A Victim!

So you get a pop up on your screen and it might even be from a company that you have an account with. The pop up asks for a username and password or for personal information to verify your account. What do you do? Close out of it immediately. Maybe you get a random email asking you to confirm you information, close out of it immediately. If you have need to update any account information, go directly to the appropriate site to do so. All of us are vulnerable to this type of Cyber Crime and more. It’s important therefore, that when you are online, don’t just share everything about yourself, especially on Social Media. Make sure your network is properly secured. In some cases, if you have a secondary computer that is older and doesn’t need to be connected online, use this to input all your account info and passwords on it. Who every thought that one day we would have as many wireless networks as we do now. There are millions of free wireless networks all around us. It has never been as easy to take any of your mobile devices anywhere in the world, and connect to a wireless network.

However, with all these advancements and the ease of use with this wireless technology, how safe are they to connect to them? TechHub Direct offers network security services for your home or business network. Think about the last time you connected to a wireless network? Were you checking you bank account, email, or maybe your social media accounts? Maybe the last network you connected to was your own home or business network. So the questions that arise are, how safe is it really to just connect to any wireless network? More importantly, how secure is YOUR OWN wireless network? You will be surprised to know that many wireless networks people connect to whether it is at there home, business, or public location, are not fully secured. This presents the risk of your financial and/or personal information getting leaked.

Top Network Security Tips!

WIFI Set Up
WIFI Set Up

Let’s take this very common scenario and paint the picture for you. A consumer or small business owner goes out to his local retail electronic store and buys a high end, extended range, reliable wireless router. Some common brands that are purchased are Linksys, Cisco, Netgear, Asus, Belkin. This person goes homes and either hires a tech or installs the wireless router himself at his location. He or his tech looks at the small sheet of instructions in the box and within 30 minutes, his wireless network is up and running. Now that his wireless network is up and running, all his mobile devices are connected to the internet.

The problem is that most “techs” or people set up there wireless network by only changing the network name (SSID) and the wireless password. Once this process is done, they think there network is secured and ready for use. Network security is a big deal so check out some of our recommendations below! However, are some things to help in FULLY securing your wireless network:

  • Do not just change the Wi-Fi password on the router. In addition to this, change the actual username and password for the administrative log in of the router. By default, each wireless router has a log in. They are extremely easy to log into since these default usernames and passwords are all available online through the manufactures’ websites.
  • When you change your network name, do not change it to, “Hackers Beware” or “Can’t Get Pass This.” Don’t make your network a challenge for hackers to crack. Choose a simple network name without using any personal name related to you.
  • Hide the SSID. Instead of allowing your network name to actual show, hide it. That way, when there are mobile devices that are looking for a wireless network to connect to, your network is hidden and not being show on the nearby network list.
  • Do not use the standard WEP encryption that comes with the router. WEP is better than no encryption but there are other levels of security for your router that make it harder for hackers to get into your network. Use WPA2 AES Encryption.
  • When choosing a location for your wireless router in your home or business, pick a location that will benefit you the most. Putting your router in the center of your home or business would be the most ideal place. That way your network is not being broadcasted to outer areas that are unneeded.
  • If you work a certain schedule every week, you know there will be times when you will not be home. Why not set your router to deactivate during the times you are not home, especially if you have other computers connected to the network.
  • Make sure you wireless router always has the latest firmware on it. Keep your hardware updated, especially a security device like your wireless router.
  • Here is one thing many people rarely ever do, forget to secure their wireless printer. If you have a wireless printer which many people do nowadays, make sure it is secure. Believe it or not, your network could be hacked through your wireless printer. Make sure to change the username and password for the admin settings. If they are not changed, it is easy to get what is called the default gateway address. This address is the address to potentially acquire access to your router.
  • Always make sure that your Firewall is enabled on your wireless router.
